Frequently Asked Questions

What is Scrambler Therapy?

Scrambler Therapy is a non-invasive, drug-free treatment designed to help retrain the nervous system's response to chronic pain. It delivers gentle electrical signals through electrodes placed on the skin near the area of pain, aiming to replace pain messages with non-pain information. This process can help the brain reinterpret pain signals, potentially reducing the perception of pain.

How does Scrambler Therapy work?

The therapy sends "non-danger" signals through the same nerve pathways that carry pain signals to the brain. By introducing these new messages, Scrambler Therapy attempts to "scramble" the pain signals, encouraging the brain to perceive them differently. This approach is based on the concept of neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to reorganise itself by forming new neural connections.

What conditions may benefit from Scrambler Therapy?

Scrambler Therapy may be considered for various persistent pain conditions, including:

  • Neuropathic pain

  • Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy

  • Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)

  • Low back pain

  • Neck pain

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Phantom limb pain

  • Post-herpetic neuralgia (shingles pain)

It's important to note that individual results may vary, and Scrambler Therapy may not be suitable for all types of pain or all individuals. A thorough assessment is conducted to determine suitability.

Who should not undergo Scrambler Therapy?

Scrambler Therapy is not recommended for individuals with:

  • Pacemakers or implanted defibrillators

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding

  • Seizure disorders (e.g., epilepsy)

  • Pain of unknown origin or acute pain

  • Open wounds or skin infections near the treatment area

  • Unstable heart conditions

  • Previous intolerance to transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)

  • Active withdrawal from drugs or alcohol

  • Severe cognitive impairment

A comprehensive assessment is conducted to ensure the therapy's safety and appropriateness for each individual.

What does the treatment involve?

The standard protocol involves 10 sessions over two weeks (Monday to Friday). Each session lasts approximately 40 to 60 minutes. During treatment, you'll be comfortably seated, and electrodes will be placed on your skin near the area of pain. The device delivers a tingling sensation, which is adjusted to your comfort level. Most patients find the experience soothing.

How soon might I notice results?

Some individuals report relief after the first few sessions, while others may notice improvements later in the treatment course. By the seventh or eighth session, many patients experience significant pain reduction. However, responses vary, and a small percentage may not find the therapy effective.

How long do the effects last?

Pain relief duration varies among individuals. Some experience relief lasting several months, while others may require booster sessions sooner. Booster sessions are single treatments offered as needed to help maintain results.

Is Scrambler Therapy safe?

Scrambler Therapy is generally well-tolerated and considered safe when administered by trained professionals. Some people may experience mild, temporary side effects such as skin redness at the electrode sites. There is no medication involved, and it does not interfere with your existing prescriptions.

Do I need a referral?

No formal referral is required. However, we encourage you to discuss this therapy with your GP or specialist to ensure it's appropriate for your overall care plan. You'll be asked to confirm that other options have been considered and that you'll continue following your existing care plan.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows access to the area near your pain. Avoid applying lotion, powder, or oils to the skin on treatment days. We provide gowns if needed.

Can I postpone sessions if I’m unwell?

Yes. We understand that illness or unexpected events can arise. If you need to reschedule a session, please contact us as soon as possible. We also strongly encourage travel insurance if booking flights or accommodation for treatment.

Is Scrambler Therapy covered by Medicare or private health insurance?

Currently, Scrambler Therapy is not eligible for rebates through Medicare or private health funds. However, some third-party payers such as the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA), WorkCover, and motor vehicle insurers may consider funding. If you are applying for reimbursement, we can provide supporting documentation.

Is the treatment guaranteed to work?

Scrambler Therapy is an emerging, evidence-informed option for people with difficult-to-treat pain. Research is growing, and while many people do report significant improvements, individual results vary. We'll monitor your progress closely and help you decide whether to continue based on your response.

I still have questions. Who can I speak to?

You're always welcome to contact us directly. We'll answer your questions with care, honesty, and clinical clarity.
